Ever had sauerkraut? How about Kefir? Maybe pickles? DEFINITELY CHEESE!
These are all fermented foods, foods that undergo a contained microbial growth process. In just about every part of the world, there are examples of fermented foods. This could be for a variety of reasons such as the pre-refrigeration era (as we know it today), extending shelf life for foods, taste, and recent research has also shown the health benefits for fermented foods.
A few products that are often fermented:
-Soybeans
-Legumes
-Vegetables
-Dairy (yogurt, cheese, and Kefir)
-Meat
-Fish
-Cereals
-Fruits
-Kimchi
-Doogh
-Sauerkraut
-Pickles
-Vinegar
But there are so many more!
Kombucha is a fermented with a "starter" (or SCOBY from a previous batch) then added to black tea to create this gut healthy beverage.
Fermented foods seem to be probiotic microorganisms rich with lactic acid and bacteria. Recent research has correlated healthy guts with a healthy brain as well. The bacteria from our gut can speak to our brain through the nervous system, send nutrients to our blood, and communicate with our immune system cells, all to help the body repair and recover.
Our gut health, or balance of the microorganisms that occupy our digestive tract, and is extremely important. Not only can it help with all of the below, but is essential to making sure our body operates in a powerful and sustainable way.
A few other positive correlations to fermented foods:
The fact that tiny little microorganisms can have such a positive outcome on us (large organisms) is amazing! Think of how many conditions can be improved by adding a bit more bacteria to our daily lives.
Antibiotics basically do the opposite of probiotics. It is important to build gut health back if antibiotics are absolutely necessary.
But how much bacteria should we have in our gut?
Only a few TRILLION!
In conclusion, yes, probiotics from fermented foods seem to be essential for our gut health and overall health.
Now if you do not mind me, I am going to grab some Kombucha.
Thank you for reading!
